Electricity Bill Calculator — Overview

An Electricity Bill Calculator helps you estimate your monthly electricity bill using either slab-based tariff rates or a flat rate per unit. Most Indian states use slab-based pricing where the rate per unit increases progressively with consumption (e.g., ₹4/unit for 1-100 units, ₹5.50/unit for 101-200 units, and so on).

This calculator supports both modes – switch between Slab-Based and Flat Rate tabs as per your requirement. In slab mode, you can edit, add, or remove tariff slabs to match your local DISCOM rates. The calculator then provides a slab-wise breakup of charges along with fixed charges and taxes for an accurate bill estimate.

This is useful for verifying your electricity bill, comparing costs across different consumption levels, or budgeting your monthly household expenses.

How is it calculated?

Follow these steps to calculate your electricity bill:

Step 1: Choose your calculation mode – Slab-Based (progressive rates) or Flat Rate (single rate per unit).

Step 2: Enter your total units consumed (kWh) from your meter reading.

Step 3 (Slab Mode): The default tariff slabs are pre-filled. Click the "Edit Slabs" button to customize the slab ranges and rates to match your state's DISCOM tariff.

Step 3 (Flat Rate Mode): Enter your rate per unit (₹/kWh).

Step 4: Add any fixed/monthly charges and tax/surcharge percentage.

Slab-Based Formula:

Energy Charges = Sum of (Units in each slab × Slab rate)

Total Bill = Energy Charges + Fixed Charges + Tax%

Flat Rate Formula:

Total Bill = (Units × Rate per Unit) + Fixed Charges + Tax%

You can find your tariff slabs, fixed charges, and tax rates on your last electricity bill or from your state DISCOM website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Slab-based billing means different consumption ranges (slabs) are charged at different per-unit rates. For example, the first 100 units may cost ₹4/unit, the next 100 at ₹5.50/unit, and so on. This progressive pricing means higher consumption leads to a higher average cost per unit. Most Indian states follow this structure.

Your tariff slabs depend on your state, DISCOM (Distribution Company), consumer category (residential/commercial/industrial), and connected load. You can find your applicable slabs on your electricity bill or your DISCOM's official website. Use the "Edit Slabs" button in the calculator to enter your exact rates.

Use Slab-Based mode if your electricity provider charges different rates for different consumption ranges (most residential consumers in India). Use Flat Rate if your provider charges a single uniform rate per unit, which is common for some commercial or agricultural connections.

One unit of electricity equals one kilowatt-hour (kWh). It is the energy consumed when a 1,000-watt appliance runs for one hour. For example, a 100W bulb running for 10 hours = 1 unit, and a 1.5-ton AC (1,500W) running for 1 hour = 1.5 units.

Fixed charges are a flat monthly fee charged regardless of your consumption. They cover the cost of maintaining your connection, metering infrastructure, and billing. These vary based on your connected load, meter type, and DISCOM.

Switch to BEE 5-star rated appliances, use LED lights, keep AC temperature at 24-26°C, unplug devices when not in use, use natural ventilation where possible, and consider rooftop solar panels for long-term savings. Staying within lower slab limits also significantly reduces the average rate you pay.
